The prefeitura of João Pessoa will begin putting in place a free WI FI internet system called “Cidade Digital” throughout the city. Work will comence at the beginning of November 2009. According to the Mayor, Ricardo Coutinho (PSB), the new system will include digital stations in various neighbourhoods in the city.
He goes on to say “In partnership with the Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, we are going ahead with this project where free WI FI will be offered to the population at various points throughout the city. However, the main aim of the project is to provide cover to the city as a whole”
Total cost for the project will be R$21 million, with the first stage costing R$7 million.
The mayor added that the price of computer equipment is becoming more and more accessible to the public, meaning that a greater part of the population will have access to the service.
