Brazil finishes second in Latin Cup of beach soccer

February 1st, 2010

Brazil beat Uruguay 7-2 to finish second in the 2010 Latin Cup beach soccer at the Rio Quente resort in the state of Goias on Sunday.

The Brazilian victory on Sunday was not enough to win the tournament, following a historic loss to Chile 11-8 on Saturday.

After Saturday’s loss, Brazil needed to blow-out the Uruguayans and hope that Chile would stumble against Argentina on Sunday.

Brazil held up its obligation of winning, but Chile pulled off an exciting 7-6 victory over Argentina, guaranteeing the title on its total amount of goals as well as the fact winning over Brazil.

Accordingly, Chile won its first ever Latin Cup. Brazil finished second, followed by Uruguay and Argentina in the four-team tournament.

In the 11-year history of the tournament, Brazil only failed to win twice, with the other time in 2000 when Brazil finished third behind Portugal and Spain.

On the bright side for Brazil, Alexandre Soares celebrated his 100th career victory as head coach of the national team, losing only three games and tying once.

Brazil returns to the sands to face Switzerland on February 15 in Costa do Sauipe, Bahia.
