Brazil being lined up for Croker

December 4th, 2009

Brazil are being lined-up to play the Republic of Ireland at Croke Park in March in a money-spinning friendly.

The Republic’s failure to qualify for the World Cup finals was a major blow for the FAI’s finances.

However, the mooted 3 March friendly - almost certainly at Croke Park - would boost the FAI’s coffers substantially and go some way to ease the financial pain of failing to qualify.

Reports from Brazil today said that the game was on the cards although the FAI said that talks were at ‘a preliminary stage’.

The Association is also waiting on the outcome of tomorrow’s World Cup draw, which may lead to the possibility of other friendly matches.

Relics of Don Bosco travel to Brazil

December 4th, 2009

St. John Bosco

The world pilgrimage that in the next six years will have crossed five continents, arrived on November 30 in Porto Alegre. The urn containing the mortal remains of St. John Bosco, the Italian priest, founder of the Salesian Congregation, was greeted by hundreds of faithful who improvised a procession between the Guaiba Bridge and the Parish of Sao Miguel, in the district of Mont Serrat. From Rio Grande, the pilgrimage will also go to visit Bage, Santa Rosa, and Viamao, where the Salesians manage various centers of the state.

Last Auguest, the urn left from Turin, Italy, where Don Bosco began his work and where he is buried. The pilgrimage will pass through 133 countries in which the Salesians are present. The trip will last until 2015, which marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the priest who founded the Congregation 150 years ago, for the education and training of youth.

In Brazil, the urn, which contains a hand and arm of Don Bosco, has already passed through Parana and Santa Catarina. The relics are accompanied by a group of Italian priests and will remain in Brazil until February 28, 2010.

France miss out on World Cup seed

December 2nd, 2009

Both France and Portugal miss out on a crucial seeding spot

The decision will no doubt be perceived as ‘payback’ for France’s controversial qualification to the World Cup.

The World Cup winners in 1998 and finalists in 2006 will not be a seeded team at the 2010 World Cup, setting up the potential for group stage clashes with teams such as Brazil or Spain.

The seeding only fuels widespread media speculation that France would be ‘punished’ by Fifa after persistent protests by the Irish Football Association.

Brazil Is Not Laughing and Threatens to Sue Robin Williams

December 2nd, 2009

Nobody seems to be laughing in Brazil at the joke told by Robin Williams to David Letterman in his Late Show on how Brazilians were able to bring the Olympics to their country. Rio’s mayor called the joke rude and senseless. The governor of the state refused to talk about it and Rio’s Olympic committee is threatening to sue the comedian in a US court.

Commenting on why Chicago lost to Rio in Copenhagen with Brazil being chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games, Williams said: “Chicago sent Oprah and Michelle. Brazil sent 50 strippers and a pound of blow.” (more…)
