There have been many changes in João Pessoa since the introduction of the new law for people with disabilities in January 2009. The bus fleet is gradually being replaced and there are now around 70 buses which have been adapted with special accessories, forty of which have been fitted with elevators.
Many restaurants have fitted ramps with handrails to the entrances and toilets. Some have had special toilets fitted too. The requirement means all buildings that are accessible to the public should comply.
Many footpaths have ramped access to pedestrian crossings. They are identified by metal sign posts and blue painted knobbly pavings marked with the international wheelchair symbol. This is particularly noticeable along the sea front from Bessa down to Cabo Branco.
