GENERAL RULES
A ‘Permanent Residence Visa’ may be granted to legal dependents of a Brazilian national or of a foreign citizen with permanent resident status in Brazil, pending authorization from the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations. The form for applying for a visa may be downloaded here (pdf file).
- Applicants must lodge their application in person
- First entry into Brazil must be within 90 days from the date the visa is issued (It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure the application is lodged accordingly)
- Within 30 days of arrival in Brazil, bearers of a ‘Permanent Resident Visa’ must register with the Brazilian Immigration authorities (DPMAF) and submit the second copy of the visa application form, which will have been stamped and returned to them by the Consulate General
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (original documents and one complete set of photocopies)
From the applicant:
- Applicant’s passport, valid for no less than 6 months (Soiled, damaged or defaced passports will not be accepted.In case of name change due to marriage, passport must have been amended accordingly,Passport photocopy must be authenticated by the Consulate General, fee applicable)
- Two application forms, duly filled and signed by the applicant
- Two passport-size photographs
- For applicants of 18 years of age or above: Certificate of Prosecution/Conviction History
- Marriage certificates must be registered at the Brazilian Consulate General whenever one of the spouses is a Brazilian national
- An authenticated photocopy is required when Marriage certificate is issued in Brazil
- In respect of children under 18 of divorced parents, a Court order of custody duly legalised by the Consulate General, in case of contested divorce, or an authorisation from the parent staying behind, certified by a Notary public and legalised by the Consulate General, in case of uncontested divorce (consular fees applicable, in either case)
- Full Birth certificate of any accompanying children, duly legalised by the Consulate General (fees applicable), and a photocopy
- Proof of residence for at least 12 months prior to application (e.g. a letter from the Register of Electors, or land-line telephone bills, or a letter from the applicant’s GP), based on which the Consulate General will issue a Certificate of Residence (fee applicable)
- Certificate of vaccination, where necessary
- Receipt of payment of the consular fee
From the spouse (if Brazilian or permanent resident in Brazil)
- Authenticated photocopy of the Brazilian identification card, or of passport and RNE card if foreign permanent resident (fee applicable)
- Term of responsibility, signed in the presence of the Consular authority (in case of Brazilian nationals), duly certified by the Consulate General (fee applicable), upon presentation of passport.
Note: Holders of a Brazilian ‘Resident Visa’ are exempt from paying import duty on their personal and household goods as well as professional equipment, provided that their belongings arrive in Brazil no earlier than 3 months and no later than 6 months from the traveller’s arrival in the country
DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS APPLY WHEN APPLICANT HAS BEEN MARRIED TO A BRAZILIAN CITIZEN FOR 5 OR MORE YEARS
