Registration of Marriages in Brazil

Any marriage registry of a Brazilian citizen celebrated abroad will be valid in Brazil if it is registered in the 1st Registry of the domicile of the Brazilian party. When neither one of the couple has their domicile in Brazil, the registration will have to be made in the 1st Registry of the Federal District in Brasilia.

If one or both of the married couple cannot be present for the registration process, the registration can be made by means of a Proxy/Power of Attorney prepared for this specific purpose.

The registration of a marriage celebrated abroad or at a Brazilian Consulate can be made at any time thereafter, even when the parties concerned are not back in Brazil.

It is important to mention that if the marriage is registered within 180 days of the date of return to Brazil of either one of the spouses, it will become effective here as of the date of the wedding.

If the registration is made after that time period, the marriage will become effective here on the date of its registration in the 1st. Registry of their domicile in Brazil.
