Culture and Art in Joao Pessoa

João Pessoa is blessed with exhibitions and concerts throughout the year. The cultural calender is full of dates for art exhibitions, book signings, poetry readings, classical dance competitions, visits from ballet companies and orchestras. João Pessoa has several orchestras and the UFPB university music department is the envy of Brazil with its concerts at the Sao Fransico church. Most of the hotels display regional art for sale, there are galleries everywhere including the Praça da Independencia and even the shops of the artesanarto centres in Tambau pay homage to the skills of the artists of yesteryear.

The Prefeitura supports cultural events throughout the city and provides training courses for the youth of the city to preserve those traditions. The prefeitura has even built an arts centre in Cabo Branco dedicated to the arts and another is to be built very soon.

However, one mans culture is another mans clutter and music falls into this category. There are a wide range of musical tastes in João Pessoa and in Paraíba generally. In fact the whole musical spectrum can be found here whether you like it or not.
