The Espaco Energia in João Pessoa takes visitors through the history of electricity. It is a great place for adults and kids to learn more about the physical phenomenon that we rely upon so much and take for granted: electricity.
The museum starts the journey with scenes of what life was like in Brazil before the arrival of electricity in the 19th century. Next there are demonstrations of the type of electricity used in the 19th century and how the electrical plants were constructed and placed around Brazil. The next part of the museum has several interactive displays that visitors can do and by experimenting learn more about electricity and electrical production. The final part of the museum explores the importance of the efficient use of energy and shows a contemporary house equipped with the typical modern appliances.
The Espaco Energia is administered by Brazil’s electricity company SAELPA. There is the Parahyba Cafe and art gallery in the complex in addition to the energy area. There are often concerts and book launches held there.
The Espaco Energia is a very popular school excursion destination and there are often groups of kids going through the energy area. Going to the museum in the afternoon is a good way to avoid large groups.
The Espaco Energia can be found on Avenida President Epitacio Person in the former Cruz do Rio do Peixe power station at Usina Cultural SAELPA in front of the College Lourdinas. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 8am to 11am and 2pm to 5pm. On the weekends it is open from 3pm to 5:15pm. Admission is free.
