A survey released yesterday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows the size of income inequality in Paraíba. According to the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), the state has the second worst income distribution in the country and 41.4% paraibanos from aged 10 have an income below the poverty level (U.S. $ 465 ), the third largest percentage in the country and the Northeast, behind the Piauí and Ceará, with 43.53% and 41.97, respectively.
Nevertheless, the state has the highest rate of Northeastern workers with high wages and education.
According to the Gini index, which measures wage inequality in the calculation of zero (ideal) to one, Paraíba has a level of 0.577, behind the Federal District, which is 0.601.
However, in 2004, the Gini index was even higher, with 0.582, from 0.564 to 0.580 in 2006 and the following year. The Gini index of Paraiba is much higher than that of Brazil (0.521) and the Northeast (0.546).
