The Group of Eight industrialized nations is “in agony,” as emerging countries gain more power in the International Monetary Fund and the Group of 20 becomes the new global forum for economic issues, a top Brazilian official said on Friday.
Marco Aurelio Garcia, foreign policy adviser to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, confirmed on Friday that the G20 countries agreed at their summit in Pittsburgh to shift at least 5 percent of the IMF’s voting rights to emerging economies.
“We are reforming the Bretton Woods institutions so they can better cope with the global financial crisis,” Garcia told reporters.
He said a new world order was emerging, with Brazil as an important global player.
“The G8 is not dead but is in clear agony,” he said. “That is why we are going to have two G20 meetings next year, in Canada and in Korea.”
