No police officers involved in the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes will be disciplined, despite an inquest finding that catastrophic failures led to his death in London.
Jurors rejected a verdict of lawful killing at the Brazilian’s inquest last December and called into question the evidence of two marksmen who shot dead the 27-year-old after he had been confused for a suicide bomber at Stockwell Tube station in 2005.
After a third review of evidence, the Independent Police Complaints Commission told the family yesterday that it stands by its original decision not to punish any officers.
Relatives and friends who have campaigned for the past four years remain outraged that no one at Scotland Yard has accepted personal responsibility, and complain that many of the officers involved have since been promoted.
The family continue to fight for “justice for Jean” at the European Court and a compensation payout is expected to be agreed later this year with the Metropolitan police.
An IPCC spokesman said: “The IPCC has advised lawyers acting for Jean Charles de Menezes’ family, the Metropolitan Police and the Metropolitan Police Authority that it will stand by its decision not to recommend disciplinary actions against the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr de Menezes in July 2005.
“The IPCC had reviewed its original decision in the light of the inquest into Mr de Menezes’ death which concluded in December 2008.
“The review was undertaken at the request of Mr de Menezes’ family and followed a review by the Crown Prosecution Service of its own decisions after the inquest.
“In making this decision, the IPCC has carefully considered the family’s representations, the evidence identified by its own investigation and all subsequent legal proceedings.”
