Brazil’s industrial employment rate was up 0.3 percent in August compared to July, and down 6.7 percent from August last year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported Thursday.
The results indicated that employment in the industrial sector had begun to reflect rises registered in Brazil’s industrial production this year.
In the first eight months of 2009, the industrial employment rate declined by 5.5 percent from the same period in 2008.
The number of paid hours for workers in August was up by 0.3 percent compared to that of July, and down 7 percent compared to August 2008. In the January to August 2009 period, the number of paid hours was down 6.3 percent from the same period in 2008.
Salaries were down 0.4 percent compared to July, and 6.2 percent compared to August 2008. In the first eight months of 2008,salaries in the industrial sector were down 2.2 percent from the same period last year.
