Brazilian opposition candidate Jose Serra of the Social Democrats, is tied with the presidential nominee of the ruling Workers’ Party, Dilma Rousseff, according to a poll released Friday by the Datafolha polling institute.
The poll showed Serra with 39% of voter intentions against 38% for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s hand-picked Workers’ Party candidate Rousseff.
Datafolha said it was considered a tie given poll’s margin of error of two percentage points.
In a similar Datafolha poll released in May, Serra scored 37% of voter intentions, while Rousseff also scored 37% of voter intentions.
Trailing Rousseff and Serra was Green Party candidate Marina Silva, with backing from 9% of respondents.
Earlier this month, other polls showed Rousseff gaining ground. Ibope and Vox Populi polling institutes, showed Rousseff with 45% of the vote against 38% for Serra.
Datafolha, the polling institute of Brazil‘s largest newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo, interviewed 2,658 voting-age Brazilians nationwide on June 30 and July 1.
The presidential election will take place in October.
